Missing student Harsha's body found in Chicago
Chicago, USA, Sept 28: The body of Harsha Maddula, a second year student at Northwestern University who was missing for 6 days found Thursday night.
Harsha was last seen on Saturday at 12:30 mid night after an off-campus party in Evanston, Chicago near the University. 6 days later on Thursday evening, his body was found at Wilmette Harbor where his mobile phone was last recorded pinging a cell tower.
Harsha is an engineering student from New Hyde Park, New York.
Many questions remained unanswered. 'Maddula's wallet with his Northwestern ID card and his cell phone were found on the body. Wilmette police, who were on the scene, said there were no signs of foul play on the body,' said Alan Cubbage, Northwestern University vice president for university relations.
Harsha was last seen early Saturday leaving an off-campus party approximately two miles away from the harbor. It is not known why or how he arrived at the harbor or how he died.
It's still unclear whether he left alone or with a group, or who he was last with, university officials said. Investigators say a signal from the student's cellphone pinged a communications tower near the harbor about 1 a.m. Saturday.
On Wednesday, a team of 21 law enforcement agencies and fire departments from three counties conducted the search, and the FBI joined the investigation, according to the school. Also on Wednesday, Maddula's parents, Prasad Maddula and Dhana Lakshmi Maddula, along with the student's uncle, Srinivas Maddali, announced a $25,000 reward for information about his whereabouts.
The harbor was't the type of place Maddula would normally visit because he's more of an indoors person, his family said.
Telugu Associations across the United States helped a lot in spreading the message to search for Harsha since he was missing. The community was shocked to know the death news on Friday morning.
