Congress fighting against odds in Nandigama
VIJAYAWADA: It looks like the Congress party's efforts to win the byelections in the Nandigama Assembly constituency Saturday (Sept 13) may not get the desired results due to several factors including the sympathy towards the TDP candidate.
The Congress, which has suffered a humiliating defeat in the general elections in Andhra Pradesh, is now concentrating on Nandigama to enter into the Andhra Pradesh Assembly.
Senior Congress leaders including PCC president N Raghuveera Reddy, former PCC president B Satyanarayana, formerUnion minister JD Seelam, Kanna Lakshminarayna, Kondru Murali and former MP GV Harsha Kumar have toured the constituency to convince the voters to support the Congress candidate.
They appealed to the voters to give them a chance to fight for the cause of people by focussing on the the delay in waiver of agricultural and DWCRA loans.
The main contest is between TDP candidate Tangirala Sowmya and Congress candidate Bodapati Babu Rao. Sowmya is the daughter of Tangirala Prabhakara Rao whose sudden demise necessitated this byelection. Prabhakra Rao won the election defeating YSR Congress candidate M Jaganmohan Rao. Congress candidate polled just 1,988 votes.
Since 1983, except in 1989, the TDP has won the seat. It may be noted that the YSR Congress is not contesting the elections.
Speaking to medias, a senior Congress leader said that the party was not hoping to win the elections as the people of the entire district had hailed the TDP government's decision to make Vijayawada and its surrounding areas the Capital region. Incidentally, Namdigama falls under the Capital region.
