Mother puts infant on sale for Rs 1 Lakh! HYDERABAD: In a swift action, the Alwal police rescued a 7-month-old boy who was put on sale by his mother near a vegetable market in Old Alwal in Secunderabad on Sunday.
Police said the woman, Sailaja (30), was estranged from her husband and is working as a daily wage labourer to eke out livelihood. But, facing financial problems, she decided to sell her child.
Alwal police inspector SV Harikrishna said that the woman was negotiating with some people to sell the child when the police team rushed there on being tipped off.
'We took the woman and the child into custody. During questioning, the woman, Sailaja, told us that she had married one Ramesh a few years ago. Later, Ramesh separated from her and is living at Malkajgiri. She is living with her two children in Old Alwal while working as a labourer.
As she failed to earn enough money to nurture her two kids, she decided to sell one of them for Rs 1 lakh,' the inspector said. Police concluded that she became mentally depressed after her husband had deserted her.
The mother and the child were taken to the police station where the woman was given counselling. Meanwhile, Ramesh was brought to the police station by a team of policemen and briefed about his wife's attempt to sell a child of theirs.
Police informed child welfare officials and handed over the boy to them. Later, the child was shifted to a rescue home for temporarily shelter.
