Panchayats in VGTM area rendered powerless Hyderabad, Ocotber 1: The Andhra Pradesh Government has suspended powers delegated to village panchayats in the jurisdiction of Vijayawada-Guntur-Tenali-Mangalagiri Urban Development Area (VGTMUDA).
It issued a GO (MS No 201) restoring powers related to control on development and use of land and buildings back to VGTMUDA. According to officials, the decision was taken to prevent illegal layouts, constructions and occupation of buildings under VGTMUDA limits.
Since VGTM area has been earmarked for the new capital, the demand for land in the 846-odd villages under the urban development authority's jurisdiction has suddenly shot up.
Fearing that cash-strapped panchayats might give permissions for the use of lands and buildings under their purview to generate revenue, the government has come out with this GO, the officials said, adding this also prevents any future complications in the government's land acquisition drive.
