Cops throw a safety net around IT Corridor in city Hyderabad : With catchy phrases like 'Be Aware Be Alert, Be Safe' and 'Your Safety, Our Concern', the Cyberabad Police is trying to capture the imagination of the young, especially women working in the IT corridor.
Though the awareness among women on issues concerning their security has increased after Nirbhaya case in Delhi in 2012 and Abhaya incident in Hyderabad last year, the overall situation is far from satisfactory.Even CM K Chandrasekhar Rao on Sunday expressed concern over safety of women in Hyderabad.
'We are trying to reach out to the 75,000 women working in the IT firms in Cyberabad region. We found in our interactions recently that many are not aware of our initiatives. Our attempt is to sensitize them on their safety and security,' says C V Anand, who as Cyberabad Police Commissioner has made women's security one of his priorities.
The government too conveyed a message of its commitment to address issues faced by women techies by recently inaugurating the first all-women police station in the newly-formed State in the IT corridor. The station has separate rooms for providing medicare and counseling to women in distress.
'We wanted to provide an environment of safety to the panic-stricken victims. We understand that women feel more comfortable reporting their problems to other women,' C V Anand says.
However, he points out at the paucity of women police personnel in Cyberabad when asked about providing a dedicated women's desk at every police station. The recently formed Society for Cyberabad Security Council (SCSC) Women Forum, a body comprising of women police officials and IT employees, is another step in ensuring security of women IT employees. 'We want to convey the message that awareness is the first line of defence.
In the coming two months our teams are going to visit IT companies and conduct training sessions for women. We hope that our training will help women to be more vigilant,' says Mamta Vegunata, Vice-Chairperson of the Forum.
While every attempt is being made by the authorities at ensuring women's security, the key to remain safe is, to borrow from Cyberabad Police's slogan, by being alert and aware.
