Allagadda by-poll on November 8 HYDERABAD: The byelection for Allagadda Assembly seat in Kurnool district, which was lying vacant following the death of YSR Congress Party leader Bhuma Shoba Nagireddy in an accident, will now be held on November 8.
The Election Commission on Tuesday announced the schedule for Allagadda Assembly byelection. Bypoll notification will be issued on October 14 and counting would be held on Nov 12.
The EC has announced the bypoll schedule after Hyderabad High Court had given green signal for the conduct of the poll.
A key leader of the YSR Congress, Shobha died in a car crash in her constituency on April 24. However, the Eelection Commission did not countermand the election as the YSR Congress is not a recognised party. Interestingly she won the poll by defeating her nearest rival G Prabhakar Reddy of the TDP by nearly 18,000 votes.
The EC had earlier excluded Allagadda assembly constituency from the list of byelections to three Lok Sabha and 33 assembly seats across nine states held on September 13. Following which, Shobha's husband and former MLA Bhuma Nagi Reddy moved the high court and the court directed the Election Commission to conduct the bypoll.
With EC announcing the bypoll date the political atmosphere in the faction-ridden Allagadda constituency has once again hotted up. Though YSRC was expecting to win the bypoll without contest but with Congress leadership announcing that it will field its nominee for the ensuing byelection the atmosphere has been charged up.
However, the ruling TDP is in a dilemma as YSRC gave way to the party in the recent Nandigama byelection and it was expecting the yellow party to respond similarly.
According to sources a section of the TDP leaders from Kurnool district, including deputy chief minister KE Krishna Murthy, were said to be in favour of opting out of the race as they were afraid of defeat whereas another section wants the party to contest so as to instil confidence among party cadres.
With TDP in a dilemma and Congress not having strong candidate it would be a one- sided contest with Bhuma family having good clout in the constituency.
Shobha was elected four times consecutively from Allagadda constituency. Bhuma family members have been winning this seat continuously since 1989.
