City is unsafe for us: Eunuchs & Transgenders HYDERABAD: The city is no longer a safe place for transgenders and eunuchs, says Telangnana Hijra Transgender Samiti in the wake of recent attacks by rowdies.
According to THTS, there have been more than 30 attacks on transgenders by rowdy- sheeters in the past six months. Of all the cases, only one FIR has been registered so far.
'Banjara Hills police refused to register a case when the victims lodged a complaint against the attackers. Usually, police do not come to our rescue whenever we are attacked. Many of us have even stopped going to police stations because of their indifference,' said Bittu, a member of THTS.
Greeshma, a lawyer, said the society had always been unkind to them. 'They are rejected everywhere. They are not allowed to live in colonies. They don't get jobs. Worse, hospitals do not treat them,' she said, adding that there were many instances of Hijras being attacked severely in public places nobody coming to their rescue.
Rukmini, a transgender who was recently attacked by a rowdy, said police harassment was like rubbing salt into the wound. 'That is the reason we stopped going to police stations.
A rowdy-sheeter, Venkat of Sanatnagar area, has been targeting transgenders from several months. He attacked several of us. He is roaming free despite his criminal record,' she alleged.
