Telangana legislators' salaries to be doubled HYDERABAD: The salaries of Telangana legislators (MLAs and MLCs) are going to double up to Rs 2 lakh. At present, they are drawing a little less than Rs 1 lakh, including all allowances, a month. In all, there are 160 legislators including MLAs and MLCs.
Chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is contemplating doubling the salaries since he believes that with a mere Rs 1 lakh, they are not able to discharge the responsibilities entrusted to them effectively.
According to sources, it had been brought to KCR's notice that each legislator is spending up to Rs 80,000 a month on fuel alone for visiting his or her constituency, shuttle between the constituency and district headquarters, and then travel to the state capital frequently.
This apart, they pay for receiving and playing host to guests who visit them. At present, they are paying from their pockets to meet the expenses on this account, official sources said.
The higher salaries would cost the state exchequer Rs 3.20 crore a month, Rs 38.40 crore a year and Rs 192 crore for the five- year term. Assuming that the state's annual budget is about Rs 1 lakh crore, legislators' salaries will be less than 0.03 percent of the total budget, the sources explained.
