Powering North Andhra is top priority HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Government is making all out efforts to restore power supply, snapped by Cyclone Hudhud in Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts.
According to sources in the Chief Minister's Office, in all likelihood, power supply to a major portion of Visakhapatnam would be restored by Tuesday morning. Efforts are on to supply 80 MW power to the city through Gajuwaka transmission line from sub-stations outside Visakhapatnam.
According to Energy Secretary Ajay Jain, the cyclone has damaged sub-station equipment, electric poles, transformers and transmission lines. Two 400 KV sub-stations, 10 220 KV sub-stations and 25 132 KV sub-stations are severely hit by the cyclone.
Around 20,000 poles have been damaged. Also, the NPTC's 2,000 MW Simhadri Thermal Power Station has been shut down. Jain said efforts are on to arrange alternative supply to Visakhapatnam from any of the following sources: 132 KV Tuni-Koruprolu sub-station, 132 KV Pithapuram sub-station and 220 KV Vizag switching station.
All engineers, employees, operation and maintenance staff are putting in efforts to restore power supply, he said.
APTransco CMD K Vijayanand, who rushed to Visakhapatnam, said 2,000 personnel consisting of engineers and workers have been deployed by Andhra Pradesh Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (APSPDCL) in Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam districts, which come under the jurisdiction of the power utility.
Around 500 cement poles of 9.1 metres length, 28,000 poles of 8 metres and 900-km-long power cables have been sent to the cyclone-affected areas.
