Good Samaritans plunges in action VISAKHAPATNAM: Even as many people struggled to gather their belongings in city on Monday in the aftermath of cyclone Hudhud, some good samaritans went out of the way to help their fellow citizens.
From fetching groceries to showing the way forward in the maze of road blocks, these people made sure that everyone reached home safely. Many people came on to the roads with whatever equipment they could lay their hands on -- sickles, axes, ropes, screw-drivers and hammers.
Rather than waiting for the officials to help them, people who have been cleaning their houses since Sunday evening, came on to the roads to clear the roads in their neighbourhood.
'We need not be social activists or officials. In fact, self-help is the best way to get out of this mess. Let the officials bother about restoration of power, water and communications,' said Dr N Rangachary at Visalakshi Nagar.
At Lalithanagar, near Sankaramatham, Havish Kumar along with his friend Shiva helped motorists to cross the road dividers as the road ahead was blocked by a tree. The duo placed concrete slabs lying outside a nearby shop to allow the bike riders to cross the road. 'I have been watching them having trouble in returning to the nearest road gap to cross.
There is no other way forward but to take the opposite road. We went to help an elderly man but continued helping all the motorists,' said Havish, a management student residing at Lalithanagar.
Similarly, Krishnamurthy, a watchman stood near a road gap at Daba Gardens and guided people to take a right turn to reach their destination.
People like Kumar and Leemesh did not hesitate twice before fetching essentials like eggs, milk and water for their neighbours. Many youngsters could be seen operating the handpumps in many bylanes as the locals made beelines to fetch water. If one thought these were small deeds, ask those who benefitted from the good samaritans.
