Hussainsagar's filth turns off KCR HYDERABAD: Having decided to restore the irrigation tanks in the state to their past glory, chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao is now determined to bring back the pristine nature of Hussainsagar, an important landmark of Hyderabad and once a drinking water source for the entire city.
The chief minister also wants to construct an alternative water body for Ganesh idol immersion and name it Vinayak Sagar. Rao, who made a surprise visit to the lake on Wednesday, was taken aback by the amount of sewage and industrial waste finding its way into the lake. Sewage canals from Balkampet, Banjara Hills, Yousufguda, Kukutpally and other areas flow into the Hussainsagar, making its water emit foul smell.
Addressing a review meeting with GHMC, HMDA, HWWSB officials later, Rao felt it was sad that such a beautiful lake, built by Hussain Shahi in 1562 as a drinking water source, became a stench-emitting water body. He wanted the officials to take steps for restoring the lake to its past glory of being a beautiful lake with clean and clear water. He said officials should focus more on stopping the release of sewage and industrial waste.
When huge amounts of sewage are dumped into the lake, the limited purification through treatment plants is hardly sufficient. He wanted only rain water diverted to the lake which has a storage capacity of 0.9 tmcft.
Pointing out that every year, thousands of idols are immersed during Ganesh festival, Dasara, etc, resulting in its pollution, he proposed an alternative lake to be constructed at Indira Park for idol immersion. The new lake will be named 'Vinayak Sagar'. He warned lake encroachers of stern action.
