Floods hit normal life in AP VIJAYAWADA: Two women, both sisters, were washed away in the overflowing Edduvagu rivulet, near Madgula village, in Gurajala mandal of Guntur district Sunday.
According to sources, the incident took place while D Anasuyamma (50) and her younger sister Orusu Radha (48) of Guntur city were crossing the rivulet. While the body of Anasuyamma has been recovered, that of Radha is yet to be traced.
Several residential colonies in Macharla, Guntur and Piduguralla were inundated due to heavy rainfall and road connectivity to 12 villages in the district has been disrupted following overflowing of streams and canals.
Vehicular traffic on the Guntur-Macharla road was stopped by police as the swollen Galivagu rivulet is overflowing above the height of the bridge. The highest rainfall of 29 cm was recorded at Macharla in Guntur district followed by Rentachintala (15 cm) and Bapatla (11 cm).
Meanwhile, the water level at Pulichintala across river Krishna downstream of the Nagarjuna Sagar Project (NSP) is gradually increasing due heavy inflows. Seven crest gates have been lifted at the Nagarjuna Sagar dam to allow 74,000 cusecs water to flow into Prakasam Barrage. Several villages were inundated and crops in thousands of acres were submerged.
As many as 35 crest gates of Prakasam Barrage were lifted to discharge 15,000 cusecs water into the sea, according to sources in the Irrigation Department.
Meanwhile, Krishna and Prakasam districts have also recorded a heavy rainfall. Several low-lying areas have been inundated while streams and rivulets are overflowing.
Vijayawada city was plunged into darkness for several hours Friday night due to heavy rain accompanied by gales.
