Vizag Metro Rail: DMRC to conduct study VISAKHAPATNAM: Undeterred by the total devastation caused by cyclone Hudhud, Vizag is proceeding apace with the metro rail project. A team from Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), led by its principal advisor E Sreedharan, will arrive in the city on Tuesday to conduct a feasibility study for the much-awaited Vizag Metro Rail (VMR) project. They will also interact with the officials concerned before submitting a report to the state government in this regard.
The state government had engaged DMRC to conduct a feasibility study on the possibility of implementing metro rail projects in Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada.
E Sreedharan, who was appointed as the principal advisor for metro rail projects, had visited Vijayawada to study the Vijayawada - Guntur - Tenali - Mangalagiri metro rail (VGTMMR) recently and was expected to arrive in the Port city in the first week of October. However, the visit was postponed due to various reasons including the cyclone that ravaged the city on October 12.
The DMRC team, along with the officials of Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC), will visit the proposed sites to make a preliminary assessment of the project.
Though four corridors are under consideration, the officials are keen on taking up the 35 km stretch from Madhurawada to Gajuwaka along the National Highway-16 within the GVMC limits.
The DMRC team is expected to examine the route before holding discussions with the officials. The GVMC officials will also make a detailed presentation before the DMRC delegation later at the GVMC office.
The state government, which gave the nod to the metro rail projects at Vijayawada and Visakhapatnam on August 1 this year had also established special purpose vehicles for the same on August 14. A seven-member technical committee appointed by the state government selected DMRC as the interim consultant to conduct a feasibility study and prepare a detailed project report.
The officials at the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) said that they have already submitted the required reports to the state government and the DMRC committee. 'If everything goes well, the metro rail project will be operational by 2018,' the officials said.
