Another storm looms over Visakhapatnam VISAKHAPATNAM: The well-marked low pressure area over south-east Bay of Bengal is still persisting and the system is likely to develop into a depression in the next 48 hours. However, dry weather will prevail over coastal Andhra Pradesh in the next 24 hours, according to the Cyclone Warning Centre in the city.
Following weatherman's predictions of depression, advance alerts on heavy rain and the possible cyclone in the Bay of Bengal, collector of Visakhapatnam district N Yuvaraj held an emergency meeting with the revenue, panchayat raj, civil supplies as well as medical and health departments and directed them to take steps to face any eventuality if the low pressure turns into a cyclone.
Keeping in view the havoc wreaked by cyclone Hudhud, the collector directed the officials of all departments to be on alert. He also asked them to use the best communication system in the collectorate and make all wireless communication systems operational with additional battery back-up.
'According to the CWC alert, an average rainfall of over 12 cm is likely to occur in the district. Already, all reservoirs in the district are up to the brim and in the event of heavy rain, their gates may have to be lifted. If necessary, people in the low-lying areas should be evacuated well in advance,' Yuvaraj directed the officials.
He also directed the tahsildars to procure power generators and JCBs and other equipment as a precautionary measure. He asked all district and mandal level officials to stay stay put at their respective headquarters.
Joint collector Praveen Kumar, additional joint collector DV Reddy, RDOs Venkata Murali, Vansantha Raidu, and K Surya Rao were present.
