Fishermen oppose Gangavaram port expansion VISAKHAPATNAM : Nearly a week after the state government gave the in-principle nod to the second phase of Gangavaram Port development, fishermen led by CPM came out against the move demanding the government to settle the claims of people who were displaced due to construction of the port, before going ahead with the expansion plans.
They also wanted the government to find a solution to the pollution problem at the port at the earliest or else revoke the GO 7 issued on October 31 clearing the project implementation report.
Fishermen alleged that the Gangavaram Port had ignored the pleas for settlement of claims including relief and rehabilitation package for the displaced.
The Left party leaders also demanded that permenant employment should be provided to 750 youth belonging to the displaced families as per the high court orders and also pay salaries to the employees on par with those working at the Visakhapatnam port.
The fishermen representatives said that they would not allow the port management to take up expansion works unless their claims were settled.
