37 Karimnagar students ill after inhaling gas KARIMNAGAR: Just five days after the mysterious death of an Intermediate student on the campus of Trinity Junior College here, a gas leakage at the college left more than 37 students ill on Friday afternoon. Three of the students are being treated in ICU of a private hospital, while the condition of others is stable.
Neither the police nor the college management are aware from where the gas emanated, creating panic among parents of students. The college located in Chaitanyapuri in the town is completely air-conditioned and leakage of gas from an AC unit is not ruled out.
According to reports, after lunch, students were attending afternoon classes when several of them started experiencing sudden burning sensation in the throat and also in the eyes. Some complained of breathing problems.
It is learnt that the college management initially tried to hush up the issue, but had to shift the students to various private hospitals nearby as the condition of the effected students did not improve.
Coming to know about the incident, Karimnagar RDO B Chandrashekar rushed to the college and enquired with the students and management. He told the media that more than 37 students, most of them girls, fell unconscious due to the gas leakage.
About 17 students were discharged from different hospitals by evening, but three girl students were shifted to Apollo Reach Hospital and put in the Intensive care Unit (ICU). The district collector was also apprised of the incident, he said.
Supriya, a first year BPS student, said while they were in the classroom, they felt foul smell and burning sensation emanated from outside. 'We have closed doors and windows immediately but by then, the gas entered the rooms and we developed complications,'' she said.
Karimnagar town DSP P Ravinder told that they are yet to ascertain the exact reason that lead to students falling ill.
Meanwhile, parents rushed to the college and expressed their ire over the management for their negligence. Various student unions too staged a protest in front of the college.
SFI district secretary Bandari Shekar demanded that the district administration intervene in the 'series of incidents' at Trinity College and initiate a probe.
