Govt to take up exploration of iron ore in Bayyaram Hyderabad, Nov 17 (INN): Mines and Geology Minister T Harish Rao has informed the Telangana State Legislative Assembly that the State Government has decided to conduct detailed exploration of iron ore in Bayyaram of Khammam district.
Replying to a question raised by MLA S Venkata Veeraiah and others during Question Hour on Monday, Harish Rao said that huge quantity of iron ore deposits were available in Bayyaram. He said the AP Reorganisation Act and formation of Telangana State envisaged proposal for establishment of an integrated steel plant by Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) in Khammam district.
According to a team of SAIL officials have visited Khammam district in the month of May as part of preliminary survey for the proposed establishment of an integrated steel plant.
The State Government convened a meeting on August 6 with the SAIL officials, Mines & Geology Department and Commissioner of Industries. The SAIL informed that the iron ore requirement for the proposed project is 200 million tons for the sustainability of the unit for about 20 years.
"Since the iron ore deposits in Bayyaram have not been prospected by any agency to estimate the grade and reserves, the State Government decided to take up the matter with Geological Survey of India (GSI) or Mineral Exploration Corporation Limited (MECL) for taking up detailed exploration. A join meeting with the GSI and MECL officials is likely to be held shortly," said Harish Rao.
