India beat Netherlands by 5 wickets New Delhi, March 9: After losing wickets at regular intervals, Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni resurrected Indian run-chase against the Netherlands in their World Cup clash at the Ferozeshah Kotla in New Delhi on Wednesday. Mudassar Bukhari dismissed Gautam Gambhir (28) to make India's run-chase more tricky and difficult.
Skipper Peter Borren added more misery to India when he clean bowled Virat Kohli (12) in the fifteenth over after Pieter Seelaar took three quick wickets to halt India's rapid march at the Ferozeshah Kotla stadium. After dismissing Virender Sehwag (39) in the eighth over, Seelaar struck twice in the tenth to send Sachin Tendulkar (27) and Yusuf Pathan (11) back to the pavilion. Sehwag slammed two huge sixes and five fours in his 26-ball blitzkrieg and added quick-fire 69-run opening stand with Tendulkar.
Tendulkar started confidently and smashed six boundaries in his 22-ball inning. Yusuf too smacked a six and a four in his 10-ball cameo. Earlier, Zaheer Khan took three wickets for 20 runs to help India bowl out the Netherlands for 189 at the Ferozeshah Kotla stadium. Zaheer wrapped up the Netherlands innings by taking the wickets of skipper Peter Borren (38) and Mudassar Bukhari (21) in the 47th over, which also halted the late onslaught by the two batsmen.
Borren and Bukhari hit two huge sixes each down the order to take their total to 189 at the end after they were reduced to 151/8 in 42.2 overs. Borren faced 36 balls and also hit three fours to go with two sixes whereas Bukhari slammed a four and two sixes in his 18-ball cameo. Leg-spinner Piyush Chawla took his second wicket of the match when he dismissed Alexei Kervezee (11) in the 39th over.
Tom de Grooth (5) got run out soon after Zaheer Khan scalped Bas Zuiderent (0) as his first victim of the match. Wesley Barresi became Yuvraj Singh's 100th ODI victim as the Netherlands lost wickets at regular intervals. Pacer Ashish Nehra struck in the 30th over to dismiss Tom Cooper (29) and reduced Netherlands to 100/4. Cooper hit two fours in his 47-ball knock.
Yuvraj Singh continued his good form with the ball as he took his second wicket of the match by dismissing Ryan ten Doeschate (11) in the 29th over to go with Barresi's wicket. Barresi contributed 26 runs off 58 balls, which included two fours. Chawla dismissed Eric Szwarczynski (28) to give India their first breakthrough after the Netherlands started slowly but confidently.
Szwarczynski hit four boundaries in his patient 42 balls inning and put on 56-run opening stand with Wesley Barresi for the Netherlands. He was foxed by Chawla's wrong one and was clean bowled in the 16th over. Even though the runs were hard to come by for the Dutch, both Szwarczynski and Barresi negotiated the hosts' bowlers well as the Indian captain MS Dhoni tried as many as four bowlers in the first ten overs without success. Earlier, Netherlands captain Peter Borren won the toss and chose to bat.
India have rested Munaf Patel and brought in Ashish Nehra. Indian captain MS Dhoni said they would have batted first as the track is expected to go slow. But quickly added it is nice to get exposure for chasing runs. Regarding team change, he informed Nehra is back in the side in place of Munaf. Further he said that they would look to improve on their fielding and also added that they have to bowl well initially and in the Powerplay overs.
Dutch skipper Borren said that chasing has not been good for them and they will try to do the same thing that they did against England. Added they need to be disciplined in their bowling against the powerful Indian batting. This match affords India just about the last chance to hammer out strategies and game plans before big battles become the order of the day. After this tie, India play South Africa and West Indies, two formidable opponents, in their final group matches before the knock-outs begin.
