Pune Inc bats for men in blue

Pune: When Sachin Tendulkar takes on Umar Gul in the World Cup semi-final on Wednesday, he will be cheered by not only the crowd in Mohali, but also thousands of employees of companies in Pune.

Many corporate houses in Pune have made special arrangements for their employees to watch the India-Pak clash in the semi-finals with some firms even declaring it a half day.

'We will be starting our work early on Wednesday (8.30 am) and the match will be screened at the cafeteria. We have planned a dress code of blue. Those who wish to go home to watch the match with their families can do so. As we are an IT company and our timings are flexible, we will try to compensate by workingextra during the week,' said Deepak Nathani, chief operating officer of Cybage.

Persistent Systems Ltd has made screening arrangements for employees. 'Since Persistent has its own cricket team, we understand the spirit and excitement. We will be screening the match for our employees in the cafeteria and the auditorium. We have urged our employees to manage their work and deliverables in this week so that there are no pending assignments,' said Kishor Bhalerao, senior vice-president (HR), Persistent Systems.

Kiran Banavalikar, director (HR) at Messung Group of Companies, said the company has arranged for a 29-inch TV set in the canteen so that employees can enjoy the match. 'The India-Pakistan match has always been a do-or-die one. People are always attached to it and it's the biggest match for all citizens in India,' he said.

Some companies are giving their employees an extra day's pay for working on Wednesday. Sachin Bharadwaj, CEO of Tastykhana said, 'Since we are into online food ordering and delivering, there would be orders flowing in, so we can't afford to close our office. We would give our employees an extra day's pay to encourage them to work on Wednesday.'

Some of the firms, including those in public relations, have declared a half day on Wednesday. 'The India-Pakistan match has always been an exciting cause to participate in nationalistic fervour for every passionate Indian. Hence as a special treat, we will be giving a half day to all our employees across our 16 offices on March 30,' said Shailaja Sharma, branch director of Prefect Relations, Pune. N Chandramouli, CEO of Blue Lotus Communication revealed similar plans. Companies like ADP India are conducting a quiz, 'Krick Crack' with spot prizes for staffers.
