US rifles for Mumbai final Mumbai: For the first time, the Mumbai Police will deploy three sophisticated rifles which can penetrate walls, procured from the US in the aftermath of the 26/11 attack, as part of security for the World Cup final.
The three 0.50 caliber M107 Barret 'anti-material' long-range sniper rifles will be part of the weapons package to be pressed into action in case of an attack. 'There are three such rifles in our arsenal, and these will be deployed strategically at different locations with Quick Response Team commandos,' said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) Rajkumar Vhatkar.
'These rifles are very useful in hostage scenarios as bullets fired from them can penetrate 12-inch thick walls in case terrorists are holed up in a room or behind a barricade. They can also pierce armoured vehicles if necessary,' said Vhatkar.
