Father takes SSC student to her death

Vijayawada: A 15-year-old girl, who was on her way to take the SSC exam, was crushed to death by an APSRTC bus here on Saturday. The girl, Yerugunta Vaishnavi, was being taken to the exam centre by her father, Brahma Reddy, on a motorcycle when the bus apparently hit the two-wheeler's handle throwing them off balance. Police said Reddy had taken the wrong route to reach the exam centre early.

Vaishnavi was a student of Nirmala Convent High School and had been appearing for the SSC exams at Patamata ZP girls' high school. She set out for the school around 8.30 a.m along with her father. According to the police, Brahma Reddy took the wrong route near the NTR circle to go near the e-seva centre on Bandar road, Patamata. He applied sudden brakes to avoid hitting two auto-rickshaws ahead of him. In the meantime, an APSRTC bus, coming from Autonagar and going towards Benz circle, hit the handle of his motorcycle.

The next moment, he lost control of the vehicle and both fell down. Vaishnavi fell on the side of the bus and came under its rear wheels. The bus ran over her head leading to her instant death. Brahma Reddy, who fell on the right side, escaped with minor injuries.

Vaishnavi was to appear for the Hindi (second language) examination. 'The bus was moving slowly but Brahma Reddy appeared to be in a hurry. He could have waited for the bus to pass by,' a traffic police official said.

As the news of her death spread, Vaishnavi's mother Srilakshmi rushed to the spot only to find her daughter lying in a pool of blood. The shocked parents were seen crying inconsolably while passers-by gathered in large numbers. Vaishnavi was their second daughter. The eldest, Sushmita, is an Intermediate student.

Brahma Reddy works as an accounts manager in a private firm. They are natives of Ongole. 'Vaishnavi wrote her first two papers of Telugu on March 24 and 25 and had prepared well for her Hindi examination,' said a relative. Patamata SI KVSV Prasad told Express that they had taken the RTC bus driver into custody and seized the bus. After the post-mortem, the parents took Vaishnavi's body to Ongole for her last rites.
