Building collapses at Afzulgunj, one killed

Hyderabad, Sept 9 (INN): In a ghastly mishap, a labourer was killed when the poles supporting the roof of the building slipped and the roof crashed down near Shankar Sher Hotel in Afzulgunj on Thursday. According to Sultan Bazaar ACP Narayana, seven labourers were demolishing the building and had put in place wood and iron poles to prop the roof up.

The poles slipped and the roof caved in, trapping two labourers Jaani and Sunder beneath the rubble. Sunder managed to escape with minor injuries as he was close to a wall when the mishap occurred. Some rods had come between Sunder and the falling debris, taking the brunt of the falling rubble.

Jaani is believed to have been killed instantly since his body was buried deep in the rubble. Authorities took the help of JCBs to retrieve his body after several hours. The body was shifted to Osmania General Hospital. Seven labourers had been at the site of the Neemkar building when the mishap occurred at around 11:30 AM on Thursday. The workers had been demolishing the building since the past two days.

The building used to house the Vishnu Oil Distributers and a Unani doctors clinic. Talking to INN, Nagesh one of the labourers said, Seven of us had been engaged to demolish the building in which Jani, Sunder, Guru, myself, Shivkumar, Tippaiah and Ramu were called here by one Abbu Miya from TV tower in Musa Rambagh labour adda and were offered about Rs 300 per day. A case has not been registered because of the reason that they have not received any complaint from any one till yet on this case regard.

Meanwhile, Vishal Neemkar, the son of the building owner told INN that his father and his four uncles have received notice 5 years ago from GHMC to vacate the building since it was dilapidated and unsafe. Vishal claimed that they had vacated the premises a long time ago. But one of the tenants, CD Batliwala had filed a petition in court and managed to get a stay order on it. The dismantling work on the building was taken up only after the stay order was vacated.

GHMC Zonal Commissioner Chandrasekhar Reddy visited the spot and after verification said that already two notices were issued to the building owners on August 18 and 23. P Sunitha Mandal Revenue Officer, Nampally also inspected the site.
