Top cops relieved at peaceful procession
Hyderabad, Sept 22 (INN): Signs of relief were clearly visible on the faces of top police officials on Wednesday as the Ganesh immersion procession peacefully crossed the historic Charminar. The top officials had been instructed to strict ensure that no untoward incident occurs during the immersion procession, especially in the wake of communal violence rocking the city earlier in the year. The police officials had a dual responsibility, not only to maintain peace in the city during the procession, which had seen incidents of communal violence some years ago, but also to instill confidence among the people.
The people of the city are now bracing up for the days after the verdict by the Allahabad High Court over the Babri Masjid title suit, slated to be delivered on September 24. Wednesday saw the top police officials, led by city Police Commissioner AK Khan, Joint Commissioners Atul Singh and D Tirumal Rao, Additional Commissioner, Traffic, CV Anand, DCP, South Zone, Madhu Sudhan Reddy, IG OCTOPUS NV Surender Babu, DCP Task Force V Kamalahasan Reddy, DCP intelligence Shaik Mohammed Iqbal stationed in the old city while DCPs, Central and East Zone, Akun Sabharwal and Mahesh Chand Ladda stationed at the Moazzam Jahi Market to oversee the security arrangements.
Earlier in the day, Home Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy had visited the old city and had also inspected the arrangements. With the procession having made its way past the Moazzam Jahi Market by 8 PM, the senior officers, who had been literally burning the midnight oil by holding meetings even at 2:30 AM, can take some hours off before they are once again back on the road preparing for September 24.
