Tussle between scribes, police at Charminar Hyderabad, Oct 4 (INN): Traffic around the historic Charminar ground to a complete halt after an argument between police officials and media persons over the taking out of a rally by the scribes. Scores of journalists had gathered at the Charminar for the motorcycle rally bound for Indira Park, when Sub-Inspector A Sudhakar told the scribes that since Section 144 was in effect, the rally could not go ahead.
The journalists argued that the rally was peaceful and there was no way that it could disturb the peace in the city. Hyderabad Union of Journalist president Khaleel Quadri and vice-president Yadgiri protested at the policemen's adamant stance. After about an hour of verbal duels between the scribes and the policemen, the rallyists brushed the law-keepers protests aside and went ahead with the rally.
By the time the rally culminated at the Indira Park after making its way through Afzalgunj, Nampally, Basheer Bagh Press Club, Lower Tank Bund, the number of scribes had swelled to around 5,000 scribes. Apart from the initial argument with the Charminar police, the rally was peaceful throughout.
