Student killed as gun misfires at arms exhibition Khammam, Oct 20 (INN): A tenth class student was killed and three others injured when a gun misfired, allegedly due to the negligence of a constable at Government High School at Velairpad in Khammam district on Wednesday. According to Velairpad Sub-Inspector Ravi, the incident took place when a constable, Srinivas attached to the 6th battalion of Mangalgiri, Guntur district, was explaining the functioning of a Self Loading Rifle to students at an arms exhibition at the school. He is believed to have failed to notice the live rounds in the gun.
Srinivas was explaining how the SLR fires and pulled the trigger of the carbine on display. Unfortunately, the 9mm bullet pierced through the chest of one of the students and injured three others. The student, identified as Mediapalli Venkata Krishna (15), son of Venkateshwarlu, was killed on the spot.
As a large number of students from high schools and colleges from the district had thronged the exhibition, the officials decided to exhibit AK-47, 303 LMG, which contains 1,000 live rounds in single magazine, rubber bullets, pistols, rifles, 9 mm carbine, SLRs etc at Velairpad High School. The three injured students have been identified as Saibabu, Naveen Kumar and Kishore who sustained injuries on chest, ear and lips and legs.
The police immediately rushed the victims to Government Hospital in Sathupalli. As the condition of Saibabu deteriorated, the police have shifted him to Government Hospital in Khammam town. The condition of two others is stated to be out of danger. Police have registered a case against the constable. Registrar and Mandal Revenue Officer are expected to visit the spot to collect first hand information over the incident. The students and parents of the victims have held protests against the police and demanded Rs 10 lakh as compensation.
