High drama near Osmania campus Hyderabad, November 17: Pro-Telangana students continued their agitation over police Sub-Inspector recruitment with five of them climbing up the water tank at RTC Hospital adjacent to Osmania University campus on Wednesday threatening to jump and others damaging two RTC buses at Tarnaka. Gade Venkat, Kandula Madhu, Perika Koti, Medi Prashant and Veerswamy climbed up the water tank around 5 p.m. Displaying placards and raising slogans demanding postponement of the recruitment test, they pledged solidarity to the seven students on fast unto death in the cellar of Arts College with the same demand.
'We'll jump if you attempt to come up,' they shouted at policemen, who brought in fire-tenders and nets, and persuaded them to come down. With hundreds of students assembling, tension prevailed in the area prompting the police to drop their rescue plans. Meanwhile, a group of students rushed to the nearby Tarnaka crossroads and squatted on the road forcing the evening peak hour traffic to a grinding halt.
Another batch of students intercepted two RTC buses near the National Institute of Nutrition and pelted stones breaking their windscreens. Members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) tried to march towards Raj Bhavan but were stopped by the Punjagutta police at Khairatabad crossroads. After gathering at Anandnagar Colony lane and beneath Khairatabad flyover, the activists made a vain bid to rush towards Raj Bhavan.
They were taken into preventive custody. On learning this, students staged a sit-in before OU police station demanding their release. Another batch staged a demonstration before the house of APCC president D. Srinivas at Jubilee Hills urging him to bring pressure on the government to halt the recruitment test.
Fast unto death
Intensifying the ongoing agitation against recruitment of police Sub-Inspector, the Osmania University Students Joint Action Committee late on Wednesday night announced that 1,000 students would begin fast unto death from Thursday at Arts College. 'All pro-Telangana organisations and political parties will support our cause. We call upon students to stage demonstrations before residences of public representatives and gherao Ministers in Telangana on the issue,' said Pidamarthi Ravi and Raja Ram Yadav of OUSJAC.
