CBI gets custody of Swami Asimanand Hyderabad, Nov 26 (INN): The XIV Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate at the Nampally Criminal Court on Friday gave the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) seven days to question Swami Asimanand, one of the accused in the 2007 Mecca Masjid bomb blast case. The prosecution had sought 15 days' police custody of the Swami but this plea was brushed aside by the Magistrate. The seven day period will begin from Saturday.
The absconding 'Swami' alias Naba Kumar Sarkar was arrested by the CBI on November 19 from Haridwar in connection with the blast at the historic Mecca Masjid here on May 18, 2007, which left nine persons dead. He is presently under the judicial remand and lodged in a special cell at the Chenchalguda Central Prison here in view of threat to his life.
Earlier, the Court had asked the CBI to specify the investigation it wants to conduct since it was seeking custody of Asimanand. Accused counsel Kesava Rao pleaded with the Court to dismiss the CBI plea for additional custody of Swami as he was suffering from neurological problems. The CBI counsel had told that it cannot reveal details about the case in an 'Open Court' since they were of a sensitive nature and asked the Court to order a 15-day police custody of the accused.
