OU students protest against semester exams Hyderabad, Jan 19 (NSS): Fresh protests erupted in the Osmania University on Wednesday after students refused to write the first semester examinations which were announced by the government and tried to take out a rally from the campus to Gun Park. According to reports coming in, the police had to resort to firing teargas shells to disperse the students who were adamant on taking out the rally. Unconfirmed reports suggest that one student was injured in the resulting chaos.
The students were protesting against the directives issued by Higher Education Minister Damodar Rajanarsimha who had announced that the examinations would begin from January 20 after the colleges reopened after Sankranti festival. The University authorities had conducted the examinations, following the government directions.
The tension among the students, palpable since morning, finally galvanised them to take out the rally as a form of protest. The students were stopped at the NCC Gate by the police who told them that they did not have permission for the rally. This was followed by heated exchanges between the police and the protestors, leading to jostling. The police then lobbed the teargas shells and cane-charged the protestors.
