Cherlapally inmates' kin move SHRC, seek official's suspension Hyderabad, Feb 3 (INN): Family members of prisoners in Cherlapally Jail are spending sleepless nights, anxious over the fate of their loved one and worried over their safety after the recent alleged riots which had rocked the prison. In this regard, the relatives accompanied by MBT Corporator Amjadullah Khan Khalid and others filed a petition before the State Human Rights Commission seeking its intervention to safeguard the inmates' lives.
Speaking to INN, Mr Mujahid Hashmi said that a petition was filed with regard to the jail mayhem which took place on January 31. The appellants sought the suspension of the Jail Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent. The complainants alleged that prisoners belonging to a particular community were targeted and beaten up black and blue. The petitioners further alleged that the pretext used by the jail authorities was that the prisoners were suspected to be using Mobile and Satellites phones behind bars.
'We have come here with a request to save the lives of the Muslim prisoners confined in the Central Cherlapally Jail; the assault was plotted by jail employees at the behest of Jail Superintendent,' Mr Mujahid Hashmi said. He further added that the assault saw 22 prisoners being left injured. Mr Hashmi further charged that the concerned authorities were not in a mood to inform the families of the prisioners about their whereabouts after the assault.
According to the petitioners, the prisoners faced harassment behind bars despite government giving assurances and promises of looking into the earlier complaints. The alleged assault took place on January 31 at about 6:30 pm when the prisoners in the Cherlapally Jail were said to have clashed with security personnel. The alleged riot led to the jail security resort to a lathi charge, leaving more than a dozen prisoners injured. However the authorities claimed that jail officials were at the receiving end of the attack.
