Tension in Old City as SI makes alleged blasphemous remarks Hyderabad, Feb 18 (INN): A tense atmosphere prevailed in the Old City for some hours on Friday after some youth in an around Doodh Bowli area pelted stones at the police after one of sub-inspectors attached to the Hussain Alam police station had allegedly making derogatory comments against their religion. The protestors alleged that sub-inspector M Raju had insulted their religion by making blasphemous remarks, hurting their sentiments.
The trouble began when some youths asked for more time to remove banners and flags since they planned to organize a mass-feeding camp for the poor in connection with a religious event. The sub-inspector is learnt to have insisted that the flags must be removed immediately, despite the youths' pleas. During the course of arguments, the sub-inspector is believed to have made some unsavoury comments, leading to the youths protesting.
As word spread about the Sub-inspector's remarks, crowds began to form and went on a rampage against the police. Around 12 vehicles were damaged. One of the youth who was present at the time the trouble began said that matters would not have gone out of hand had the higher officials reacted promptly to their complaint against the sub-inspector and made him to apologise for his remarks.
An uneasy calm atmosphere prevailed in the area at the time of filing of this report. Meanwhile, the police have rushed additional forces, including CRPF and Task Force personnel to the area to ensure that the situation does not escalate and goes out of hand.
