Pro-Telangana rally in old city foiled
Hyderabad, March 10 (INN): The police on Thursday foiled an attempt by political leaders to take out a rally from the old city as part of the Million March by arresting them. Several pro-Telangana leaders belong to the BJP, CPI, Muslim League, TRS, TDP and Jamat-e-Islami were arrested as soon as they started their rally from the historic Charminar.
Talking to media persons, BJP leader Baddam Bal Reddy took exception to the arrests and accused the police of acting in a highhanded manner. Mr Reddy said that the attempt to thwart the Million March was reflective of the government's attempt to suppress the legitimate voice of the Telangana people.
He said that the clamping down on a peaceful rally has unveiled the government which was against the formation of Telangana. 'The agitation will continue till the state is carved out, we are not going to bow down before the state or Central government. Our rally is peacefully and their highhandedness has distressed us immensely,' Mr Reddy stated.
Later the agitators were arrested and taken to different police station of the old city. Meanwhile the police advised business establishment owners around the Charminar and the Paththergatty road to down their shutters for the day, as a precautionary measure. Following the police request, about 70 per cent of business establishments on the main road shut shop for the day.
