Bholakpur tragedy in Misrigunj residents' minds Hyderabad, March 13 (INN): Residents of Misrigunj in the old city are afraid to quench their thirst these days. They fear that if they consume the water supplied by the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board, they may fall ill since it is contaminated to the extent that it is virtually undrinkable.
Md Nayeem, a resident, says, 'For the last couple of months we are being supplied contaminated water, and that too at a very low pressure. The water has a foul smell, as if it is drainage water but supplied after being purified.'
With the Bholakpur tragedy of May 2009 in which 13 people died and over 500 fell ill in mind, Misrigunj residents express fear that they may also be hospitalised due to diarrhoea, caused by drinking the contaminated water. Mr Nayeem says, 'Several written and oral complaints were made to the water filter at Chandulal Baradari but somehow nothing seems to work.'
Apart from the contaminated water in Misrigunj, the water woes spring up come summer with inadequate supply and low pressure being reported from around the city.
The drastic decrease in the amount of potable water supply to the various residential pockets in twin cities force the people to opt for bottled water and turn to tankers for their household needs.
The decreased water supply is not only limited to those residing in the old city but the complaints come from across the GHMC limits. This is evident from the complaints received at the HMWSSB at the Prajavani programme held every Monday.
Similarly low pressure and inadequate potable water supply has been a major concern for the residents of Mahaveer-Nagar at Saber-Nagar. These residents say that 'Last week was really bad in terms of water supply. 'We not only had to face low pressure but the water was supplied for only 30 minutes or less, the entire week,' the residents said.
