IIT entrance exam is flawed, says Chukka Ramaiah
Hyderabad: The present pattern of IIT entrance examination is flawed and needs a change, eminent educationist and MLC Chukka Ramaiah has said. Speaking at the launch of 'Concept Maps', which is developed by Butterfly Edufields exclusively for IIT and AIEEE aspirants, the ace IIT coaching expert did not hide his displeasure at the present pattern of entrance examinations conducted by the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).
'The objective-type question paper is causing a decline in the level of excellence in children. Due to this type of examination, the analytical power of the students cannot be assessed,' he said and demanded that the objectivetype question paper be replaced by one which allows proper analysis by the candidates.
Dwelling on the conditions in the IITs, he said, 'Many posts at IITs are vacant and funding of the institutes is meagre'. Lamenting the decling standards of candidates taking the IIT entrance tests from the state, Ramaiah noted that the coaching for IIT entrance examination became commercialised and held the government and the IIT authorities equally responsible for the situation.
He appealed to teachers and the students to work towards bringing back the reputation that the state once enjoyed of contributing qualitative IIT students. Quoting an IIT professor, he went on: 'An IIT professor has recently shared an incident with me involving a student from Andhra Pradesh.
The student, after joining the IIT, approached the professor for subject notes. The professor was astonished because at IITs it is the students who prepare notes and not the professors. This only shows what kind of students we are producing now in our state.'
After launching the Concept Maps, Ramaiah advised the makers of the product to concentrate more on making the students go through the thinking procedure rather than hand over solutions. The Concept Maps, developed by IITians and academicians, is a revision tool for the subjects of mathematics, physics and chemistry.
K.Sharat Chandra, founder- director of Butterfly Edufields, said the CD contains about 100 maps in which the entire IIT syllabus is be covered. 'The concept is based on mind-mapping, which is a proven approach to effective revision,' he said.
