Dandi March II volunteers wrote a letter to Bapu San Francisco, March 26: The volunteers who participated in the Dandi March II, a campaign against the Corruption in India, wrote a letter to Mahatma Gandhi explaining him about the current situation in India. Here is the complete text of the letter.
Dear Bapu,
In the years since you left us, India and Indians have come a long way. The foundations your generation of leaders laid have held the nation in good stead. Even with periodic blips along the way, democracy has flourished, secularism has prevailed and India has once again risen to prominence among world nations.
But, we have fallen short of the high ideals we started with. We have forgotten your wise words about morality in politics, decentralization of power and justice for all. We only pay lip service to you, your life and your message.
Some of us living away from the motherland have been watching scandal upon scandal in India with a sense of bewilderment and helplessness.
Taking strength from the efforts of some brave Indians to fight corruption, we decided not to remain silent anymore. Inspired by the unforgettable march you led to shake up and end British rule in India, we have just completed Dandi March - II. Six Indians have walked 240 miles (the same distance as between Sabarmati Ashram and Dandi) in California. Thousands of Indians joined them for shorter distances along the way. In 40 cities and towns all over India, in 15 cities all over the USA and in cities of 10 countries across the globe, Indians came out to walk in support of this new Dandi March.
We have come to you again today - to renew our commitment to the ideals we set for our country, to vow to work for the eradication of corruption, to work towards justice and prosperity for all Indians, to build a political culture that produces moral leaders and citizens, a culture that produces worthy successors for the women and men of that time, who will stand the test of all time.
Jai Hind.
Dandi March II team and all participating patriots.
