Protest against water shortage lands resident behind bars Hyderabad, April 20 (INN): Residents of New Hafeezpet on Wednesday alleged that the police have arrested one person on fabricated charges after he led a protest on Tuesday over the acute shortage of drinking water in the locality.
According to a New Hafeezpet resident who refused to be identified, 29-year-old Md Jaffar was arrested and sent for judicial custody on the fabricated charges of stealing dill machines. The arrest was based on a complaint filed by Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation official Nagraj, the resident revealed.
Earlier, Jaffar, a resident of Premnagar had led a protest against the acute shortage of water on the National Highway No 2. The protest against the Corporation and the elected representatives came about after repeated representations to the elected representatives and the GHMC office went unheeded, said Anwar, another resident.
Throwing more light on the events which led to the arrest of Jaffar, Anwar said that the Highway, which runs adjacent to the locality was blockaded by protestors for some time.
'After the protest, a driver of the GHMC parked his vehicle and pretended to fill it with diesel. He left the heavy drilling machine on the roadside and left. Soon after, the Miyapur police arrived and took Jaffar away. We learnt later that GHMC official Nagraj had filed a complaint that the drilling machines were stolen and also named Jaffar as the suspect,' Anwar said.
'Our protest was legitimate as we had been suffering from acute water shortage since the past many months. No one heeds our plights and now we seemingly cannot even protest,' said Anwar.
He further alleged that they were threatened by the GHMC officer Nagraj and contractor Sudhakar with dire consequences if they again protest or lodge any complaint with the police.
'The localities are totally being ignored by the concerned authorities and elected leaders. Despite frequent representations and meeting political leaders, our problems remain unsolved, and that is the reason behind our protest,' the other resident stated.
