Polls for new GHMC Standing Committee on June 8 Hyderabad, May 23 (INN): Elections to the vital organ of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, the Standing Committee, would be held on June 8, according to Mayor Banda Karthika Reddy.
Ms Karthika Reddy told media persons at the Secretariat on Monday that as the term of the current Standing Committee had come to an end on April 12, elections to the new body was imminent.
The said Committee is endowed with powers and it plays a key role in taking decisions in respect of any sanctions or release of funds above Rs 20 lakh, the Mayor informed.
The cited Panel has powers to first examine and clear any subject before being tabled in the Municipal Council. The Mayor is automatically the Chairperson of the Committee.
As many as 15 members would be elected from among the 150 Corporators. The Congress party would nominate eight Members while its ally Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen would nominate seven Members. The Committee Members change every year.
Ms Karthika Reddy, who was here in connection with the overdue elections of the Committee met Ministers P Sabitha Reddy (Home), Geetha Reddy (Industries) and Mukesh Goud (Marketing) for discussions.
She was also supposed to meet Labour Minister Danam Nagender but the latter was not available. Mr Nagender is said to have gone to London for medical treatment. The GHMC has already issued a notification.
