Dharun Ravi's supporters to meet on Friday in NJ Edison, NJ: 'What happened to Dharun can happen to anyone's son or daughter. Dharun Ravi's sentencing date is May 21st, 2012 and he could end up in prison for 10 or more years', said Satya Dosapati a community activist from New Jersey.
Dharun Ravi, an 18 year old Rutgers student, is accused of secretly recording his roommate Tyler Clementi. Ravi was convicted last month on bias intimidation and invasion of privacy charges for using a webcam to spy on his Rutgers roommate, Tyler Clementi, who was with another man. Clementi later committed suicide by jumping off the George Washington Bridge.
Indian-American groups and social activists like Satya say that Dharun Ravi's case is a misapplication of the New Jersey's 'Bias Intimidation / Hate Crime Law' in Middlesex County. Dharun was denied justice because of media influence on the case ' with a lot of misinformation, and based on the facts that came out during the witness testimony that Dharun never said anything derogatory about Tyler.
They also say that the prosecutor's office has taken advantage of a faulty law ' 'Bias Intimidation / Hate Crime' which could be used to prosecute any citizen for the thoughts of others along with misplaced political pressure from activist groups to convict Ravi on Bias charges, a law that even the judge Hon. Mr. Glen Berman admitted was muddled. 'This is not the precedence we want to set in United States', said Satya Dosapati.
On Friday May 4th, Dharun's supporters are going to meet at Mirage banquet hall in Edison. Indian-Americans who have concerns about how the Ravi's case was handled by the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office, also scheduled a rally outside the Statehouse on May 14, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
'We must collectively come together so that this gross injustice is stopped now and never repeated again. Fortunately, we have received unconditional support and commitment from: concerned citizens, prominent leaders, the business community, elected officials as well as major media outlets. See ABC 20/20 extensive coverage on our website http://www.SupportDharunRavi.com ', said Satya in a press release.
'The meet at Mirage will be at 6:15 pm on Friday May 4th and all the Indian Americans please attend this program with families', requested Satya Dosapati.
