Minister road to be another necklace road HYDERABAD: Enjoying a cool breeze along the Hussainsagar on Minister road will soon be a reality as the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) is gearing up to restore this side of the lake.
Over the years, the 23-acre portion of the lake got filled up with silt and debris and during monsoon, weeds grow in the area. The HMDA is going to clear the silt so that the water holding capacity of the area increases.
R P Khajuria, member-environment, HMDA, said, 'Objective of this initiative is to restore the lake to early condition and grow trees so that the eco-balance of the lake is maintained'.
He informed that after water holding capacity of the land increases, water from Pattigadda sewerage treatment plant will be channeled into the area.
As of now, water from the treatment plant flows into Hussainsagar through a narrow channel. This initiative comes under the Hussainsagar Lake and Catchment Area Improvement Project.
'We are also planning to lay a 30-meter wide track for the people to enjoy morning walks or jogging,' said Khajuria.
Last year, there was a proposal to convert the silt filled lake into a recreation park. However, after NGOs opposed the idea as it affects the lake, HMDA dropped the plan.
The member-environment said that subsequently, water sports might come up in the lake area. He added that restoration work is under progress near Ambedkar Nagar where a pathway is being laid and trees planted.
The HMDA has also started other initiatives as part of the lake restoration project including Puja Collection Counters around Hussainasagar lake, where people can choose to hand over their pooja material in the counters rather than throwing them in the lake and immerse other material in huge water pots which are placed beside the counter to simulate immersion process in lakes.
