GHMC Mayor cross swords with Commissioner
Hyderabad: Differences between GHMC Mayor M Majid Hussain and GHMC Commissioner Somesh Kumar seem to be increasing with each passing day.
The Mayor took strong exception to the Commissioner's decision on starting garbage collection twice a day from residences, establishments and others on eight notified main roads with effect from August 1. Those littering the roads will attract penalty and criminal prosecution.
'Without the approval of the Standing Committee and general body, how can the Commissioner start the garbage collection twice a day from residences and establishments on the notified main roads. It is a policy decision and has to be approved by the elected body, no approval was taken by the Commissioner in this regard,' the Mayor said.
'Why should it be limited to certain areas. Why can't be extended to the entire city. Those officials who implement the Commissioner's orders will be held responsible,' he added.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner said that it is not a new scheme but a routine programme and does not require any approval from the standing committee or the general body. 'I have received the said proposal from the central zone and approved the file,' he added.
The GHMC announced that it would collect garbage twice a day, 11 am to 2 pm, and 8 pm to 10 pm from residences and establishments on main roads.
The GHMC has notified eight litter-free zones in Banjara Hills, Jubilee Hills, Begumpet and Khairatabad.
The notification was issued by the corporation on Wednesday stating that penalties ranging from `500 would be levied on violators. The amounts of fine will increase upon repeated violations and for the fifth violation a fine of `10,000 will be imposed, trade licence cancelled and criminal prosecution initiated for affecting public health.
