GHMC meeting put off
Hyderabad, April 7 (INN): For the first time in the history of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, the general body meeting was postponed due to want of quorum.
While none of the 44 corporators and 10 ex-officio members of MIM attended the meeting, only 17 out of 100 TRS corporators came to the GHMC Headquarters to attend the second special meeting of the corporation for co-option of two members belonging to minorities. Mayor Bonthu Ramohan, Deputy Mayor Babi Fasiuddin, MLCs M.S. Prabhakar, Bodakunti Venkateshwarlu and N. Ramchander Rao and nominated MLA Elvis Stephenson were also present.
The meeting was scheduled at 11 AM on Thursday. When the bell rang for the meeting, none of the corporators came to the council hall. Consequently, the meeting was postponed to 11.30 AM. Only 10 members, including five ex-officio members entered the council hall. When the bell rang again at 11.35 AM, only 26 members were present in the council hall. The Mayor entered the hall and finding that there was no quorum to continue the meeting, he announced the postponement of meeting within three minutes.
According to sources, the GHMC meeting was postponed due to the ongoing tussle between the TRS and MIM parties. While MIM had sought two seats out of five cooption members, the TRS has reportedly rejected MIM's plea. Municipal Administration & Urban Development Minister K. Tarakarama Rao wanted all five seats for the TRS and therefore, instead of holding election for all five cooption members together, he directed the corporation to conduct election of two member of minority communities separately. This was done to prevent MIM from getting its nominees elected to the post of co-option members of GHMC.
Following postponement of GHMC meeting on Thursday, some senior TRS leaders are trying to broker peace among the two parties. However, both MIM leaders and KTR are reportedly adamant on their stand.
