Jana proposes strong legislation to prevent defections Hyderabad, April 26 (INN): Leader of Opposition K. Jana Reddy on Tuesday proposed strong laws to prevent political defections by elected representatives.
Addressing a press conference at Congress Legislature Party office here, Jana Reddy strongly condemned Congress legislators C. Rammohan Reddy, Puvvada Ajay Kumar and Farooq Hussain for switching loyalties to ruling TRS. He said that the Congress would lodge fresh complaint with Speaker S. Madhusudan Chary and Council Chairman Swamy Goud on recent defections. They would also be urged to take immediate action on complaints lodged earlier. Further, he said that the Congress party would wage a legal battle seeking disqualification of legislators who defected to TRS.
He said that the Congress party had extended complete support to TRS Government to ensure development of Telangana State. However, he said that Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao appears to be a on a mission to completely wipe out opposition parties from the State.
Jana Reddy said that the present Anti-Defection Law was ineffective and it has been exploited by the ruling party. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi and heads of all political parties in the country should take the ongoing defections in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh very seriously. He said necessary amendments should be introduced in the laws to ensure that no elected representative switch over to other party without giving resignation.
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition in Legislative Council Mohammed Ali Shabbir slammed Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao for encouraging defections in opposition parties while neglecting issues like severe drought and rising unemployment. He said that the Chief Minister has no time to hold review on public issues. But he was completely free to offer 'khandwas' to legislators of opposition parties. He said it was completely unethical and undemocratic for legislators to join the ruling party although they were elected on the symbol of Congress party. He said some MLAs and MLCs were joining the TRS only to fulfill their personal greed.
