Children in AP's drought hit areas get Mid Day Meals Hyderabad, April 26 (INN): Children studying in all schools in 359 drought-hit mandals of Andhra Pradesh will get Mid Day Meal during summer vacation.
According to Commissioner of School Education K. Sandhya Rani, the State Government has declared 359 mandals as drought affected in the state in 10 districts except Visakhapatnam, East Godavari and West Godavari districts during Kharrif 2015-16. As per GOI guidelines, if Government declares drought in a specific area, Mid Day Meal is to be provided to the children in those schools during summer vacation. Accordingly, the State Government has accorded permission to provide Mid Day Meals to the children of classes I to IX in summer vacation i.e. from April 24 to June 12 for 40 days (except Second Saturday and Sunday).
The Commissioner said instructions have been issued to all the District Collectors, Regional Joint Directors and District Educational Officers to ensure smooth delivery of Mid Day Meals in the schools in drought affected mandals. The students may go to schools from 8.30 to 10.30 a.m. for confirming their willingness to take Mid Day Meal and take the same.
The enrollment in drought affected 359 mandals for I to IX classes is 17,48,864. On the first day i.e. 25.4.2016 out of 17.48 lakhs 3.29 lakh children have taken Mid Day Meals (i.e 18.82%). On 26.4.2016 out of 17.48 lakhs 4.69 lakh children are Mid Day Meals (i.e. 26.84%). There is 6% increase in the meals taken on day 2 compared to day 1.
