CWC forecasts flood in Godavari and Krishna basins Hyderabad, Aug 2 (INN): The Flood Forecast Monitoring Directorate of Central Water Commission on Tuesday issued advisory forecast for flood in Godavari and Krishna Basins.
"In view of heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rainfall and heavy to very heavy rainfall forecast for another two days in catchment areas of river Godavari and Krishna in Maharashtra, river levels on Godavari and Krishna are rising rapidly in Maharashtra in the districts of Nasik, Ahmednagar, Pune, Satara, Sangli and Kolhapur districts," the Directorate said in its advisory.
The river level at Godavari in the districts of Nasik, Ahmednagar and Aurangabad is likely to rise and the Godavari is likely to flow in low to moderate flood situation at Kopergaon in Ahmednagar district. Good inflows are also expected in Jaikwadi Dam in Aurangabad district during the next 2-3 days.
The river level of Krishna and its upstream tributaries like Panchganga, Dudhganga are also rising rapidly. Rainfall of around 389.2 mm has been recorded today at Mahabaleshwar in Satara district (source of river Krishna) and is still continuing with another 78 mm by 1130 hrs. "In view of such exceptionally heavy rainfall river level of Krishna is likely to rise rapidly all along its course in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh (upto Srisailam Dam) as almost all upstream dams are full, most of the dams are likely to release water," said the Advisory.
The Directorate asked the authorities concerned to maintain strict vigil at all reservoirs which are already in full conditions such as Almatti Dam and Narayanpur Dam in Vijayapura district in Karnataka and Priyadarshini Jurala Project in Mahabubnagar district of Telangana.
Srisailam Dam in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh will start getting good inflows during the next 4-7 days. "All project authorities may maintain strict vigil and take necessary action to release excess flow of water during the current vigorous spell or monsoon," the CWC advisory said.
