HC strikes down controversial GO. 123 Hyderabad, Aug 3 (INN): In a major setback to the Telangana Government, the Hyderabad High Court on Wednesday struck off the controversial GO.123 that aimed at acquiring lands for various State Government projects.
The High Court questioned the state government as to why it had to create a new law to acquire land when a law for the same purpose was still valid. The court order will have repercussions on the land acquisition for Mallannasagar and other such projects in the state.
It may be noted that the state government has brought out the GO.123 to acquire land for projects and to compensate the oustees. However, some farmers' groups knocked the doors of the High Court pointing out that the GO had many flaws and was not in the interests of the project oustees.
The High Court directed the state government to compensate the farmers according to provisions of the Land Acquisition Act of 2013 and not the GO 123. Sources in the government indicated that they would challenge the High Court order in Supreme Court.
The court order has given ammunition to the opposition parties which has intensified the attack on the ruling TRS against a spate of policies of the state government, which they termed as illogical and anti-people policies.
Soon after the High Court verdict came out, Congress leaders burst firecrackers and distributed sweets among themselves at party headquarter Gandhi Bhavan. TPCC vice president and former MP Ponnam Prabhakar termed the High Court judgment a victory of the farmers and a slap on the face of the TRS government, which was pursing anti-people policies.
