Seemandhra Ministers meet GoM, want Hyd as UT HYDERABAD: Despite bitter opposition by Telangana Congress leaders for the proposal of making Hyderabad a Union Territory, their Seemandhra counterparts are not ready to give up their demand for the same while bifurcating Andhra Pradesh.
A delegation of Union ministers from Seemandhra headed by MM Pallam Raju and Kavuri Sambasiva Rao on Friday met the Group of Ministers (GoM), set up to look into the issues arising out of bifurcation of AP, to recommend to the Centre to make Hyderabad a Union Territory while dividing the state.
A day ahead of the GoM's second meeting, slated for Saturday in Delhi, to discuss the contentious issues such as health, employment, education, sharing of river waters as well as revenue and other issues, Union ministers from Seemandhra met the GoM members - AK Antony, Sushil Kumar Shinde and Veerappa Moily - and submitted a memorandum to them in this regard.
According to sources, the ministers requested the GoM to accord Union territory status for Hyderabad while dividing the state.
They also urged the GoM to ensure legal rights over river waters for Rayalaseema and Krishna Delta region, which they feel would be worst hit by the division.
They also took the apprehensions of the students of Seemandhra, who are in Hyderabad, to the notice of the GoM, saying that the Seemandhra students might lose local status in admissions into various educational institutions and might suffer in terms of job opportunities in case Telangana was formed with Hyderabad as its integral part.
The other members of the delegation include JD Seelam, D Purandeswari, Killi Krupa Rani and Kotla Surya Prakash Reddy.
