80 villages submerged in Prakasam district ONGOLE: Heavy rain has claimed the lives of five students and marooned more than 80 villages and inundated several low-lying areas in Prakasam district.
Locals and police personnel have rescued nine persons when an RTC bus in which they were travelling was stuck midstream at Yedurallapadu village of Konakanamitla mandal.
The residents of the city have faced several hardships due to incessant rain. The city recorded 31 cm of rainfall Thursday. As several low-lying colonies in the city were inundated, the officials have shifted many people to seven relief camps.
Two girls Godugu Peerambi (18), Pinnangi Peerambi (18), and a boy Battula Srinu (18), all Intermediate students, were washed away when they were trying to cross the Sarveyreddipalli stream at Komarolu Wednesday evening. Their bodies were retrieved Thursday.
In another incident, an Intermediate student, P Konda Reddy (18), was washed away in the overflowing stream at the Koppulavaripalem village of Naguluppalapadu Mandal Thursday.
An Eighth Class student, P Vijayalakshmi, drowned in a local stream at Giddalur and her body was found at Potavaram village.
Eight commuters, who were travelling in an APSRTC to Ongole from Hyderabad, screamed for help as the bus got stuck while crossing the Musi stream at Yedurallapadu village of Konakanamitla mandal. Commuters passing by came to the bus stop and telephoned the police, revenue officials as well as relatives asking for help.
Darsi deputy superintendent of police K Venkatalakshmi, Konakanamitla tahsildar Padmavathi, villagers of Yedurallapadu, Kothapalli and Konakanamitla raced to the spot and rescued them in an exercise that lasted three hours.
Meanwhile, all the 10 gates of the Gundlakamma Project were lifted and 1.1 lakh cusecs of flood water was released into the sea. As many as 80 villages were waterlogged due to overflowing of local streams. District collector GSRKR Vijay Kumar and other officials visited the affected areas at Ongole.
