Unprecedented rain in 20 years Nalgonda: The unprecedented rain in the last 20 years has been lashing the district for the last few days bringing life to a standstill. Large scale crop damage was reported throughout the district. Nalgonda District Collector Chiranjivulu declared holidays to the schools and colleges on Saturday as there was no respite from rain.
The average rainfall in the district was recorded at 7 cm but at places like PA Palli, Dindi, Chandampet the rainfall was 19 cm which was a record. The same trend continued on Friday also.
In the divisions of Nalgonda, Devarakonda and Miryalaguda divisions and Nalgonda town, the rainfall was 15 to 18 cm. In Suryapet and Bhuvanagiri divisions the rainfall was 7 cm.
Flood water entered various areas in the town including Gandhinagar, Sivajinagar, VT Colony, Dwarakapuri, BTS, Gollaguda, Government Hospital, old town, RTC Colony, Collectorate and other areas much to the inconvenience of the people in those areas.
The district collector visited various colonies in the town and reviewed the situation. The traffic between Hyderabad and Vijayawada was disrupted at 8 pm on Thursday after the flood water inundated the national highway at Kattamgur. The collector instructed the officials to divert the traffic towards Janagaon and Suryapet.
The municipal officials used the water tankers of National Disaster Relief Force to drain the flood water. Floodwater entered Miryalaguda town. The local MLA Julakanti Ranga Reddy visited the flooded areas in the town and instructed the officials to take action. Two lorries were caught in the overflowing Halia rivulet.
One lorry was brought out safely but the other lorry was washed away in the flood water. Traffic was disrupted following overflow of rivulets like Halia, Kothapalli Vagu, Kanagal Vagu, Munugodu Vagu, Velmagudem Vagu in Pedapura mandal.
The Dindi project reached its maximum level of 39ft due to two days of rain. The officials released water from the project to the Sagar backwater.
