Life comes to standstill in Kurnool district Kurnool: Life has come to a standstill in Kurnool district due to the heavy rain that has been lashing it for the last few days. Almost all the crops which were about to be harvested were inundated and all the streams and rivulets were overflowing on Friday.
Several roads were totally damaged at several places due to the overflowing rivulets disrupting traffic to several villages. Throughout the district 33 houses collapsed in various villages during the last two days.
The farmers were the worst hit by the heavy rain caused by the low pressure in the Bay of Bengal. The maximum rainfall of 13 cm was recorded at Velugodu mandal in the district.
Crops like maize, paddy, cotton, Bengal gram were inundated with the overflowing of rivulets like Bhanavasi, Gundala and Eedugula. It was estimated that 12,500 acres of various crops were affected.
A number of farmers in Atmakuru constituency have cultivated cotton, maize, paddy, chilli, Bengal gram, red gram, groundnut, onion on a large scale. Particularly the maize farmers suffered huge loss since the maize seed was totally soaked in rain water.
In Nandikotkuru alone, 3800 quintals of maize seed was totally damaged. The farmers appeal to the government to purchase the soaked maize by organising special godowns.
Various levels of rainfall was recorded ranging from 50 mm to 130 mm in the mandals of Velugodu, Pyapili, Kothapalli, Atmakuru, Pagidyala, Srisailam, Jupadu Bangla, Bandi Atmakuru, Pamulapadu, Nandyala, Mahanandi, Rudravaram, Pattikonda, Gadivemula in the district. Twenty mm to 40 mm rainfall in 23 mandals and less than 10mm rainfall in 15 mandals was recorded in the district.
For the last three years, the scanty rainfall had taken its toll while this year the heavy rainfall damaged the prospects of kharif season.
