High stakes on Team India Bangalore, February 17: India's performance against Australia and New Zealand in the warm-up matches has forced the bookmakers to further increase the odds in favour of the co-hosts. Ladbrokes, which had rated the hosts as the favourites at 7/2 last month, have now slashed the odds to 3/1 after the win in Bangalore and Chennai. As per the latest odds, England are unlikely to make it to the last four and have been replaced by South Africa as the third favourite team. Sri Lanka continue to be the second favourites. Australia are the fourth team in the list.
'India's performance in the warm-up games has increased the team's faith amongst its supporters and more and more people have started believing that they can lift the World Cup. They are putting their money on India and odds are now more in favour of them,' Ladbrokes spokesperson Alex Donohue said from London. 'I think out of all the teams, they look like the champions even before the start of the tournament,' he added.
Meanwhile, England's routing against Australia have forced the bookmakers to push them out of the top four spots. England's odds have now gone down to 8/1 from 4/1, which were there before the ODI series Down Under. 'We think that the players are too tired and also, they might be short on confidence after their loss in Australia. Instead, we think that South Africa have really done well to win the decider against India and are also looking comfortable in the subcontinental conditions,' maintained Alex. South Africa's odds have increased from 5/1 to 11/2.
