A blow-by-blow account of Bell-gate Nottingham: The second Test between India and England at Trent Bridge witnessed high drama as Ian Bell was run out in bizarre fashion at the stroke of tea and Indian skipper recalled him at the end of the 20 minute break.
Off Ishant Sharma's last delivery in the over before tea, Eoin Morgan flicked it to deep square leg, where Preveen Kumar made a hash of a diving save. Everyone thought it was a four, but replays the fielders in the square were not too sure.
After having run two, Bell took off for the third from the striker's end in an easy jog, but Morgan pout his hand out. Bell then broke into a walk (which observers say could be because it was time for tea) Dhoni relayed the ball to the man backing up, who promptly whipped the bails off.
As the fielders looked askance at umpire Asad Rauf, he handed over Sharma's sweater and pointed to the square leg umpire, Billy Bowden, who gave Bell out.
In the commentary box, Alan Wilkins said he had word that the umpires had asked Dhoni if he would like to withdraw the appeal and call Bell back and that Dhoni declined.
But when the players came back on field, Bell walked out, as the crowd's jeers turned to cheers. How much Dhoni's magnanimity cost India will be known only at the end of the Test.
